Whilst some trends disappear into thin air, others manage to wiggle their way back into our lives. The mini skirt was shunned for a few seasons before making its comeback in late 2017 – the 90s look just blew up, and with that, serious Clueless vibes. Naturally, the mini skirt became the piece to purchase!
However, the mini skirt wasn’t a new trend in the 90s, but actually was an iconic piece of the 1960s. Women started wearing the mini skirt to demonstrate their freedom, and when big designers such as Dior failed to represent them on the catwalk, protests broke out, with women saying that luxury houses were being “unfair”. It played a small part in women’s liberty and freedom of expression, because let’s face it, we all express ourselves through our clothes.
So why now? Why is it back?
As well as the 90s trend being here to stay, we have so many ways to wear it now, compared to back then. You don’t need to wear it 90s’ Britney style with a tied up school shirt, or like Paris Hilton with a Von Dutch shirt and baseball cap. You can truly be innovative, and just be you with the piece. Plus, it’s not considered something controversial anymore. If there is one skirt everyone should have in their wardrobe, it’s the mini skirt – it’s fun, playful and girly! Also, it’s almost summer – get your legs out already!
So what are these different ways you can wear them? Here are my favorite looks…
Mini skirts are perfect for when the weather lives up to your expectations. Influencer Freddy is wearing a blush pink co-ord for her latest expedition and we absolutely love it! A matching look like this one is so girly and chic, which is totally her style, but at the same time is ideal for a beach escapade! Plus, the skirt compliments Freddy’s long legs and model proportions. Finish it off with a straw bag for ultimate summer vacay goals!
If anyone can rock a mini, it’s Em Sheldon! I love how she has made this smart-caj with an oversized blouse and a figure-hugging mini. The high-waist skirt just emphasizes her figure all the more. This outfit is perfect with heels, or for a sportier vibe, with your favorite pair of Converse, though admittedly, we love the white heels she has paired with this look!
Sammi Maria made us green with envy when she got to go to Coachella with Revolve, but what made us even more jealous were her incredible outfits. This one in particular is a favorite of ours – the ruffled mini skirt is carefree and cool for the hot weather, and the bandeau top gives it a sexier edge. She has finished off the look perfectly with another trend for the summer, the belt bag – perfect for all you festival goers!
You can never go wrong with a denim mini, as Leanne proves here. She has opted for a 90s-inspired ensemble with a cute gingham crop top – perfect for showing off your summer body! Plus, the skirt is high-waisted so it’s pretty much ticking all the boxes! We could see this ensemble with pastel pink platform sneakers to embrace the 90s vibes and a matching shoulder bag.
This may sound cliché but there is something so Parisian about a Breton-stripe tee and a denim mini – but throw on some Converse and you’ve added an androgynous feel to it. We love this outfit for running around town and enjoying the sun, but you could also wear it in Autumn/Winter with some studded boots for a grungier feel. Don’t forget the oversized sunnies for a dramatic finish!
If you are already looking to invest into your autumn wardrobe, whether it is for a fresh new you for the next school year or for a new job, I think this Chanel-esque look is perfect! As the mini skirt is short, play with layers – a tweed coat and high-neck sweater are ideal for a smarter feel, and the knee-high boots make the look more modern and fresh. You will definitely be turning heads in this outfit!
Last but not least, another way to wear a mini skirt in a more glamorous way is to wear tailoring. A long-line blazer with a tailored mini skirt will mix androgynous and feminine vibes and will balance out your figure. Finish the look off with sock boots to elongate your legs – you will ooze sophistication!
