Nyakim Gatwech, ‘Queen of the Dark’, has mesmerised the world with her stunning, sultry skin. The 24-year-old, South Sudanese model, aims to empower black women to love the skin they’re in and what better way to do this than thrive in the modeling industry? She recently shocked the world when she revealed an Uber driver asked her to bleach her skin for $10K. A ridiculous request, to which she declined, because she is proud of her ‘chocolate skin’.
We believe skin bleaching for any other reason than to improve problem areas shouldn’t be an option and Nyakim agrees. But what does whitening the skin do and how does it work? We know that skin bleaching might be a process you may never have thought about or looked into before, so we’ve done the research for you!
People may choose to undergo this process to solve issues regarding vitiligo or skin pigmentation, however, there are potential side effects. These include thinning of the skin, uneven colour loss, skin cancer and intense irritation. Bleaching your skin to please other people is 100% a no-go! We support Nyakim in her belief that we should feel confident in the skin we’re in despite what anyone else thinks.
Nyakim Gatwech: Life as a black female model
‘I am dripping melanin and honey. I am black without apology.’ Despite the childhood bullying and the knockbacks Nyakim experiences in today’s society, she never fails to inspire us with her beautiful captions that accompany the gorgeous selfies she posts on Instagram. She truly is a Queen and her words are incredibly powerful. Prepare to be blown away.
The Sudanese beauty welcomes her nickname with open arms. She told her fans: ‘I actually like the name. There is nothing wrong with darkness, and being called a Queen is just the cherry on the top. Black is not a colour of sadness, death or evil. I am the Queen of the Dark and I will bring light and love to those around me.’ Through our eyes and many others, Nyakim Gatwech is a symbol of female empowerment.
As a full-time model, Nyakim gets to work with incredible teams of creative people. From fellow models to photographers and stylists, they never fail to support each other. The work they produce is sincerely breathtaking. By showcasing female beauty, whether it’s in high fashion editorials or beauty commercials – Nyakim always looks fresh and fierce.
Nyakim doesn’t just support the love the world needs for black skin, she desires equality for all. We saw her recent collaboration with a bunch of other beautiful multi-ethnic ladies shooting a music video for musician D.O.F. Wouldn’t you agree that there is something magical about capturing ethnic mixtures of people on camera, living and loving together?
Whilst Nyakim may be our Queen, her number one inspiration and motivation in life is her mother.
‘My pastor, my mother, the apple of my eye!!’ Nyakim comes from a religious background, and she has an amazing relationship with her Mum. A woman able to dedicate a large part of her life to the church whilst raising several children is never an easy job. It’s no wonder that Nyakim grew up to become a beautiful and mature young woman. Family comes first.
Nyakim Gatwech is an outstanding and remarkable young woman. At just 24 years old, she has impacted the world more than she ever hoped she could. Having looked at the fulfilling and motivational life she lives, skin bleaching is out of the question. Nyakim has taught us that we are all beautiful in our own individual ways and our skin colour is something to cherish not fear.
We shouldn’t have to bleach our skin to suit other people’s wants and desires. All skin colours are wonderful; they make us beautiful inside and out.
